I had the honor today of finding out that I was a featured art alumus for Biola University. They asked some great questions I thought I would repost on our website.
What are some of the most exciting opportunities you have had since graduation? I have had the rare opportunity within design. I have designed the CD and collateral for the United Nations World Environment Day. My artwork was presented to the mayor of San Francisco, as well mayors from around the world. Also, I was able to be an art director on several photo shoots with renowned catalog photographer, Christina Schmidhofer. Since Biola, I’ve also launched my own design studio, worked on a new branding for Intel Labs Berkeley, and designed the 2010 Season Ticket brochure Oakland Athletics.
How do you feel that the Biola art department prepared you for your life as an artist? The Biola art department helped me be able to look at problems from different points of view, how to collaborate with other creatives, and also, it gave me fresh eyes to view the world with a sense of mystery.
Any advice for future Biola art majors? It will take time; I think that is the first lesson. After I graduated, I thought I could conquer the design world. I didn’t realize how much work and knowledge were ahead of me. Another thing to recognize is that new graphic designers only apply to design studios. In fact, there are about 100 in-house design positions for every 1-design studio position! So, I would encourage newly graduated designers to get out there, look around and apply to companies or organizations you believe in.
